Chemistry is the Science of Matter

Chemistry studies what matter is made of, how substances change, and what new substances form.

Matter and Substances

  • Element — one kind of atom (e.g., oxygen, iron).
  • Compound — two or more elements chemically joined (e.g., water H₂O, salt NaCl).
  • Mixture — substances mixed but not chemically joined (e.g., air, sand and salt).

Chemistry in Daily Life

Cooking is chemistry — heat changes food. Medicines work through chemical reactions. Even cleaning uses chemicals!

Chemical change example: when iron rusts, or when wood burns, new substances form. These are chemical (not just physical) changes.

Practice

Classify: gold, table salt, air, sugar, iron, sea water as element, compound or mixture. Check the table above for a clue.
