Word Families

Words belong to families. Today we learn three: nouns, verbs and adjectives.

  • A noun names a person, place or thing — teacher, Lagos, book.
  • A verb is an action word — run, jump, read.
  • An adjective describes a noun — big, red, tall.

Spot Them!

In the sentence "The big dog runs fast": dog is a noun, big is an adjective, runs is a verb, and fast tells us how it runs.

Practice

Sort these words into the three families: house, sing, happy, table, jump, blue, doctor. Write them in three columns.
