The Coordinate Plane

The plane has two number lines: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. They meet at the origin (0,0).

Coordinates: a point is written as (x, y). The x-value comes first (left/right), then the y-value (up/down).

Reading a Point

Point A at (3, 2): move 3 steps right along x, then 2 steps up. Point B at (−2, 4): move 2 steps left, then 4 up.

Plot: (5,0) is on the x-axis. (0,−3) is on the y-axis below the origin. (4,4) is in the top-right quadrant.

Practice

On graph paper, plot P(2,3), Q(−1,5), R(0,−2) and S(−3,0). Write the coordinates of each axis crossing.
