The Quadratic Formula
For ANY quadratic equation $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$, the solutions are:
$x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}$
Example
Solve $2x^2 + 3x - 1 = 0$
Here $a = 2, b = 3, c = -1$
$x = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{9 + 8}}{4} = \frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{17}}{4}$
